Pharmacognosy is study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources.
The Department conducts research work such as Phytochemical screening of natural drugs based on Ethnobotanical clues or traditional usage based on folklore. Plant preparations are said to be medicinal or herbal when they are used to promote health beyond basic nutrition. The study of drugs from plants includes the subjects of botany, chemistry and pharmacology.
Botany includes the identification (taxonomy), genetics and cultivation of plants. Chemical char acterization includes the isolation, identification and quantification of constituents in plant materials. Pharmacology is the study of the biological effects that the chemicals in medicinal plants have on cell cultures, animals and humans.
Students can find good placements in key areas such as,
This department offer the study of medicines derived from natural sources. It includes method of cultivation, collection, standardization, formulation of herbal medicines, isolation and characterization, phytoconstituents from natural products.
To be a leading department in research and training of pharmacy students in the field of Pharmacognosy.
Pharmaceutical chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry and pharmacology involved in with design, synthesis and developing drug candidates. Medicinal chemistry involves the identification, synthesis and development of new chemical entities suitable for therapeutic use.
It also includes the study of existing drugs, their biological properties, and their quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR).
Pharmaceutical chemistry is focused on quality aspects of medicines and aims to assure fitness and efficacy for medicinal products.
The department offers a wide area of research in the area of new drug discovery, process and developmental methods, including study of mechanism of drugs and also analytical method development for new drugs.
Computer-aided drug design and new biotechnological approaches are opening new avenues in the field of medicinal chemistry.
The options open to graduates in Pharmaceutical Chemistry include,
Our department is an interdisciplinary department incorporating medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutical organic chemistry and pharmaceutical inorganic chemistry. The research focus in Pharmaceutical Chemistry research includes synthetic chemistry, phytochemistry, pharmacological screening of herbal extracts, isolation of active compounds, structural elucidation, SAR studies and microwave assisted reactions etc.
Our department is equipped with HPLC, FTIR, and UV-Visible, Karl Fischer, Spectrophotometer, Scientific Microwave Oven, Spectro flouriometer, Auto tritrator and Flame photometer. The department plans to start two new M. Pharm. Courses in quality assurance and establish a computer aided drug design laboratory.
Pursue and deliver a dream to be among the best in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry through high quality education and research.
Pharmaceutical chemistry forms the backbone of pharmacy program. Our mission is to provide students with deep understanding and diverse scientific background, and a rewarding and challenging program of study. To mould our youngsters into Millennium Leaders in the areas of drug design and discovery, organic synthesis of medicinal and pharmaceutical agents, chemistry of natural and synthetic products, structure-activity relationship, molecular modeling, drug metabolism and molecular toxicology and many other related topics.
Pharmaceutics deals with all facets of the process of turning a new chemical entity (NCE) into a medication that can be used safely and effectively by patients in the community.
It is the science of dosage form design which covers the entire scope of pharmacy, from the basics of drug dosage and routes of administration, to the finer points of drug discovery, drug product development, and legislation and regulations governing quality standards and product approval for marketing.
Graduates can play a key role in a variety of functions across the pharmaceutical industry, Community Pharmacy and as Consultant Pharmacists
Pharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs on living organisms where a drug can be broadly defined as any chemical substance, natural or synthetic, which affects a biological system.
Studies may involve gaining knowledge of the mechanism of drug action, drug toxicity, the use of drugs as tools to delineate biological processes during health and disease, identification and validation of new cellular targets for drug action, and the design and development of new drugs.
Because of its scope, pharmacology is an inter-disciplinary science employing experimental approaches from many other scientific disciplines.
Major research of the faculty is in the areas of neuro-pharmacology,cardiovascular Pharmacology, retinopathy, inflammation, obesity, aging and gene therapy. Extramural research support is provided from, private and industrial sources.
The department maintains a separate animal house. This facility has been recognized by CPSCEA [No. 221/CPSCEA].
Students who have studied Pharmacology as Natural Scientists can embark on a wide variety of careers.
Pharmacology is the science concerned with history, sources, physical & chemical properties of drugs & the way in which drug affects living system it includes pharmocokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics, and toxicology
Our vision is to establish a leadership role in the pursuit and development of knowledge through training and research in pharmacology.
Our mission is to offer high quality education dedicated to edifice minds with confidence, honesty, social and moral responsibility.
Study of the biochemical & physiological effects of drugs & mechanisms of action “What the drug does to the body”
Deals with the absorption, distribution, biotransformation &excretion of drugs “What the body does to the drug”
Study of drugs used in the diagnosis, prevention, suppression & treatment of diseases “Deals with beneficial effects of the drugs (medicines)”
Study of biologic toxins, study of poison & its effects deals with deleterious effects of physical & chemical agents (including drugs) in human
The Division of Pharmacy Practice is comprised of faculty who provide education in the administrative and behavioral sciences, clinical services, as well as direct practice experience.communication skills and ethics in pharmacy practice and pharmacy law. The professional integrated approach to drug therapy management.
The Pharm.D. program emphasizes an integrated and problem-based approach to disease management as Clinical pharmacy services like Ward round participation, Prescription monitoring, Providing drug information through a drug information center, Adverse drug reaction monitoring, and patient counseling are practiced.
The Department of Pharmacy Practice will promote excellence in the practice of pharmacy both administratively and clinically in the provision of pharmaceutical care and services. Department faculty will be recognized nationally and locally for their efforts to contribute to patient health and well being by identifying and resolving drug and health-related problems, educating student pharmacists as life-long learners, and providing pharmaceutical care services to the community at large.
The Department will achieve its mission by:
